PURPOSE

 

The DAEP provides a highly structured and controlled academic setting with an emphasis on the core curriculum, life/social skills, and a counseling and guidance program designed to help students be more successful when they return to their home campus.

OBJECTIVES

a)    develop and utilize decision-making techniques

b)    accept responsibility for their actions

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

 

 

Students will be assigned to the DAEP in accordance with the DeSoto Code of Conduct. Students may be assigned for a minimum of fifteen (15) days up to a maximum of one school year. Offenses occurring during the last six weeks may result in a placement extending into the next school year.

 

Special education students who are assigned will be admitted by ARD committee. All special education laws and guidelines will be followed.

 

EXIT REQUIREMENTS

 

Students earn the privilege of returning to their campus when they earn 90% of their points are earned and they have returned textbooks and materials that were issued. In addition, they must be caught up on all work assigned while at DAEP.

 Students will not be eligible for release back to their home campus within the last 10 instructional days of a semester. The student will complete the semester at DAEP.

  

ATTENDANCE

 The attendance and truancy policies outlined in the current Student Code of Conduct will apply. Students may enter the building at 7:30 am. They are tardy if they are not in their seats by 8:00 am. Points are deducted if they arrive after 8:00 am. Students arriving after 8:15 am must be escorted by a parent to enter the building. Students are dismissed at 3:00 pm. While a student is assigned to DAEP, attendance, visitation, and participation in school sponsored events are prohibited. Unless accompanied by a parent or guardian, students are not to be within 300 feet of any campus for any reason. The DAEP student is not allowed to exit the car for any reason on these occasions.

  

RELEASE OF STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL

  

A student will not be released from school at times other than at the end of the school day except with permission from the principal or designee and according to the campus sign-out procedures. Any student leaving campus will face disciplinary action, including the possibility of a citation being issued.

 

TRANSFERS AND WITHDRAWALS

 

Students who withdraw from DeSoto ISD before serving/completing an assignment at DAEP shall complete the assignment upon re-enrollment in the district, unless the assignment was served in another district.

 Students who enroll in a hospital/drug treatment center may reduce their assignment time in DAEP, on a day for day basis, with the district’s approval. Verification of hospitalization/treatment must be presented upon re-entry.

 

TRANSPORTATION

 

 Students and their parents are responsible for their transportation to and from school each day. When the students arrive, they are expected to enter the building. When school is dismissed at 3:00 pm, students are expected to leave the campus immediately, within 15 minutes of dismissal. Failure to leave the campus after school could result in disciplinary action, including the possibility of receiving a criminal trespass citation. Students are not allowed to leave campus and return, or leave in another student’s vehicle unless written or verbal permission is given by both parents/guardians.

 Student drivers must present a Texas driver’s license, auto liability insurance, and a DeSoto High School issued parking permit to park on the DAEP campus parking lot. Student drivers must park in the designated parking area of the parking lot, which is in the southeast section of the parking lot. All keys will be turned in to the office.

  

MEDICATIONS

  

All medication, prescription or over the counter, must be turned in to the front desk upon arrival. The staff will control the prescription per the doctor’s instructions. All over the counter medication must be in the original, unopened container. Unopened does not mean reclosed, it means the seal on the cap has never been broken. OTC medicines must be accompanied with a note or phone call from the parent.

  

MEALS

 While attending DAEP, students will receive lunch and breakfast from the district. If a student is on free/reduced lunch they will continue while at the DAEP. If a student pays full price, they will do so at the DAEP. Fund balances automatically transfer from the home campus to DAEP. Students are not allowed to bring any outside food or drinks to the campus unless approved by submitting a doctor’s note. Any parent desiring to bring an outside lunch to eat with their child is more than welcome to do so.

  

COUNSELING

Students assigned to the DAEP will have the opportunity to participate in a counseling program. The counseling is designed to meet the students’ needs and will assist in decision-making, goal-setting, anger-management, behavioral skills, and may include drug, sex, and alcohol education.

   

CURRICULUM/INSTRUCTION

 

Students will receive instruction in their core curriculum classes (Math, ELA, Science, and Social Studies) while enrolled in the DAEP. The teachers are certified in each of their respective content areas. The classes will cover the same state standards that are being taught at the home campus.

 In addition, students will have their elective class assignments delivered to the DAEP, but it is the student’s responsibility to ensure this work is completed and turned in. If the student is having any difficulty with any elective assignments, they should let the DAEP staff know and the parent/guardian should contact the elective teacher at the home campus.

 Tutoring in the content areas will be offered during the school day as well as after school. Transportation from after school tutoring is not provided. It is the responsibility of the parent and student to arrange any transportation needs.

                                                   Supplies

Students are required to bring pencils, paper, folders, and school appropriate reading material. Pens and markers are not allowed.

 

                                                                                                                                                                                           COMPUTER RESOURCES

In preparation for participation in a technologically advanced society, students will have the opportunity to use district computers for instructional purposes. Use of these resources is limited to students working under staff supervision and for approved purposes only. Appropriate use of district technology resources is outlined in the Student Code of Conduct. Violation of these policies may result in loss of privileges and other disciplinary actions.

  

SEARCHES/MONITORING

  In our attempt to provide a safe and drug-free environment, the DAEP uses metal detectors and searches to help identify illegal items and contraband. Students will pass through metal detectors each morning upon arrival. Also, district officials have the authority and will periodically conduct additional searches. Such searches are conducted without a warrant and as permissible by law.

 Vehicles parked on school property are under the jurisdiction of the school district. School officials may search vehicles at anytime there is reasonable cause to do so, with or without the presence of the student.

  

TELECOMMUNICATION DEVICES

  

Student telecommunication devices are not allowed at DAEP. Unauthorized activation or usage will result in the confiscation of the device by any district personnel. Parents may contact the principal to arrange to pick up the device. A second violation of district policy will result in the confiscation of the device, a $15 fine being assessed, and disciplinary action. Any additional violations will result in confiscation of the device until the end of the placement or current school year as well as disciplinary action.

 

                                                                                                                                                                                STANDARDS OF CONDUCT AND EXPECTATIONS

 

 Our expectations are simple. Students are expected to exemplify the 5 Expected Behaviors:

 Follow Directions

·        Respond to all requests in a positive manner (Do what you are asked to do)

Focus on the Assigned Task

·        Maintain focus on your responsibility – (your class work, your behavior, etc.)

Remain in the Designated Area

·        Stay where you are supposed to be – (your seat, classroom, in line)

Maintain Acceptable Physical Interaction

·        Respect personal boundaries by keeping your hands, feet and objects to yourself.

Maintain Acceptable Verbal Interaction

·        Keep negative comments to yourself

·        Use school appropriate language (no profanity and no inappropriate discussions about drugs, sex, guns, or violence)

Students are also expected to:

·        come to school ready to improve their lives

·        complete all assignments given during the school day

·        speak only when given permission; any conversations or communication between students during instructional time is not allowed

·        remain attentive; laying or propping their head on anything is not allowed

·        keep their areas organized and clean

·        Report any complaints they may have to the principal, counselor, or parent

·        report any unsafe situations to DAEP staff

  

DRESS CODE

 

All students will adhere to the following:

 ·        White or black knit, polo style shirt, with collar and sleeves. Shirts must not have any visible markings or logos and must remain tucked in at all times, even with arms raised. Buttons must be fastened no lower than four inches from the top collar. Plunging neck lines and shirts showing cleavage are prohibited.

·        Only tan or black khaki pants that reach the ankles will be worn. High School students that do not have uniform clothes may wear blue or black plain jeans. The pants must be worn on the natural waistline at all times. Pants that reveal undergarments are too tight. “Hip-huggers”, “low-rise”, or any variation thereof are unacceptable. No other style /fabric pants are allowed. Pants must be hemmed with no writing on them.

·        Students are not allowed to wear shorts underneath their pants.

·        All clothing must be free from holes or tears.

·        A plain black, brown, or white belt with a traditional buckle (e.g., no logos, states, marquees, etc.) will be worn. There should be no writing, designs, or stripes on the belt. No tie or fringe belts allowed.

·        White undershirts only. Any writing or colors visible through the outer shirt are not allowed. “Long Johns”, thermal, or any other type of white shirt that extends past the sleeves of the polo shirt are allowed.

·        Shoes may be any athletic, loafer, or dress type that is not gang related. The shoe strings must match the shoe color. Shoe strings must match the shoe. No open-toed, steel toed, sandals, flip-flops, boots, or high heels are allowed.

·        Solid white or black matching socks with no writing or designs must be worn.

·        Outerwear coats/jackets must comply with district policy and must be removed upon entering the building. Outerwear that advertises anything not appropriate for school (e.g., alcohol, drugs, violence, sex, etc.) will not be allowed on campus.

·        No clothing can be worn that in any way reflects gang affiliation, conceals contraband, or creates a distraction. Any tattoos referencing gangs, drugs, or violence must be covered.

·        No backpacks, purses, bags or the like are permitted.

·        Hair must be neat and clean. No designs cut into the hair, unnatural hair colors, or extreme styles while assigned to DAEP. Students are not allowed to wear any type of hair ornaments that are distracting or can be used as weapons.

·        Fingernail polish/designs, false fingernails, and fingernails that extend beyond the fingers are not permitted.

·        Only one tube of Chapstick/Carmex is allowed. Any cosmetic items (e.g. lip gloss, lipstick, make-up), will be confiscated and disposed of.

·        No types of jewelry are allowed. This includes but is not limited to watches, earrings, “grills”, body piercings, necklaces, chains, bracelets, rubber bands, sunglasses, and rings.

 Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring their student abides by the dress code. District administrative staff will have complete and final judgment on all matters concerning the interpretation of the student dress code. Since fads in dress are subject to change, matters concerning appearance and dress not specifically covered in this policy shall be within the discretion of the administrative staff.

  

POINT SYSTEM

Students are held accountable for their behavior through the use of a point system. It is our goal to assist the students in learning to be responsible for their behavior as evidenced by their ability to function in a structured school setting.

 Each day the student will have the opportunity to earn twenty (20) points. Generally, a student will not be considered for release until a minimum of 90% of the total points possible have been earned. For example, if a student is assigned for 30 days, a maximum of 600 points can be earned.

 The student must attain at least 540 points (90% of 600) to be considered for return to the home campus. Points are not awarded if a student is absent, even if the absence is excused. Any zero point days will be made up at the end of the assigned term. If any misbehavior warrants a suspension, the student will make up two days (one day added to the number of assigned days) for each day suspended.

 

Points are given for:

 1.    Arriving on time

2.    Completing tasks/assignments

3.    Appropriate behavior/discipline in school setting

4.    Dress code

5.    Bonus points

a)    Five successive (three for elementary) 20-point days earns an extra 20 points

b)    Attending parent meetings earns an extra 20

c)    Additional bonus points may be added at the principal’s discretion

 Bonus points will not be added if a student has not had a successful day. Ultimately, the student will determine when they are released from DAEP. It is difficult for the student to return to the campus in a timely manner if they are consistently late, lose points during the day, and/or suspended from school.

 

ZERO TOLERANCE

 Students may be referred to the law enforcement/juvenile court for the following:

 

Mandated violations

1.    Truancy

2.    Traffic

3.    Tobacco/smoking

4.    Drugs/alcohol/paraphernalia

5.    Major campus disruptions

6.    Defiance of authority

a.    Physical restraint required to move a student

 

 Administrative violations

1.    Disorderly conduct – fighting/profanity/threat of violence

2.    Assault

3.    Trespassing – 1st offence (warning); 2nd offence – citation issued

4.    Criminal mischief/theft – under $50

5.    Gambling

 

 

NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES

 

Violations of the Student Code of Conduct or campus expectations will result in the appropriate disciplinary action being taken as needed. This includes, but is not limited to:

·Loss of points

·Extended DAEP placement

·Parent conference

·Citation

·Detention/Friday School

·Expulsion

           PARENT EXPECTATIONS OF DAEP STAFF:

 

·        Qualified/certified in content area

·        Demonstrate care and concern for the student, and treats parents with professional dignity

·        Demonstrate professionalism in every area. Our dress, conversation, language, attitudes, concern, and commitment to our profession should easily pass parental inspection

·        That written reports, including report cards, progress reports, discipline referrals, or any other information, are timely and accurate. These documents should only be confirmations of our previous communications. There should be no surprises.

 Naturally, it is impossible to write rules for every situation. Thus if an incident occurs that is not specifically covered in this handbook or Student Code of Conduct, the judgment of DAEP staff will prevail.

   

 

           PARENTAL PERMISSION TO VIEW FILMS

 

Occasionally, we may show films that encourage students to make wise decisions, stay in school, and avoid trouble with the judicial system. However, some films may contain adult language, or content. We believe these films will encourage students to think before making choices that may negatively impact their future. If a student feels offended by the contents of a film, they may stop viewing it at any time.
